How to design a home library

No modern device for reading information can compare with a traditional book, because printed literature, as before, remains very important and necessary for us for many reasons.

Many of us also strive to accumulate knowledge, gleaned from publications of classical and modern prose, poetry, encyclopedias and dictionaries, in order to preserve and pass them on to future generations.

When planning to arrange a place for placing a large number of books in your own house or apartment, it is better to consider the following remarks:

  • we strongly do not recommend arranging a library in the kitchen, since its specificity is such that small droplets of various vapors will settle day and night on the roots and covers of books, the damaged quality of which cannot be restored;
  • give up the idea of placing a rich collection of literature in dark non-ventilated rooms (storerooms, storerooms, basements), because mold fungus and rodents will not spare expensive publications.
  • Remember how public libraries are organized and try to follow the same rules: each book has a place and a serial number (letter of the alphabet), or, for example, you can divide all literature by genres, age categories and areas of different professions.

Spend an hour studying this article if you are determined to organize a library in your home, performing the task with all the responsibility of a devoted reader.

Turn to the classics

Of course, a home library, in the classical sense, implies organization in a spacious room, where, in addition to it, other objects are conveniently located, emphasizing the purpose of the room and the status of the owners of the house.

So, in order to create an atmosphere of complete immersion in a special world of literary adventures, it is necessary to install high massive cabinets (they can be open type or glazed), closely adjacent to each other, with simple phyllo-shaped facades.

In addition, you should buy a comfortable sofa, a sofa or a pair of ergonomic chairs and a work table. Think about the right lighting: it should be represented by an overhead floodlight, a floor lamp, working and decorative lamps.

Install island storage systems

You can use such stationary or mobile structures in every room, placing literature in them, based on the purpose of the room. For example, a small floor shelf in the living room can contain various reference books, encyclopedias and dictionaries, guides; in the bedroom – historical and adventure novels, volumes of poetry and prose; in the kitchen – recipe guides, collections on cooking dishes of the peoples of the world, etc.

Give one of the walls to the library

You should not clutter the room, even if there is enough space for several functional areas. It will be better when the home library, in the form of a large rack or frequent shelves, simply occupies the entire surface of one of the walls of the living room or study from the ceiling to the floor.

The entire supply of literature accumulated over the years will be easily and very aesthetically placed in this area of the room.

Use combined constructions

The principle of combining open and closed sections of cabinets should be used when saving space comes first. In a small one- or two-room apartment, it makes no sense to place an additional closet or shelf just for books, but if you combine two types of furniture together, you can achieve great functionality.
